Content is MDX in your repository, navigation lives in docs.json, a push deploys, and the platform handles hosting, search, the custom domain and a component library that covers callouts, tabs, cards and API reference blocks. Point it at an OpenAPI or AsyncAPI spec and you get a live playground with auth handling instead of a wall of curl examples. There is a CLI for local preview and an admin API for the parts you want scripted.

Every site emits llms.txt and llms-full.txt, serves markdown rather than HTML to agents and exposes an auto-generated MCP server, so a coding agent can pull your docs without scraping. Backing looks solid, a $45M Series B led by a16z and Salesforce Ventures landed in April 2026, and the customer list is heavy with API companies. The trade is control and money. You are renting the whole stack, and once you want any AI feature the price goes from nothing to $450 a month with credit metering on top. For a funded developer-tools company that is noise. For a personal or small-team docs site, the free tier is genuinely good and the open-source alternatives deserve a look before you cross that line.

My Take
Getting an OpenAPI spec to a working playground takes an afternoon, and the result reads better than most hand-rolled docs sites. What changed in 2026 is who the docs are for: Mintlify now reports agents making up around two thirds of requests across the sites it hosts, and every project gets an MCP server plus llms.txt with no configuration. Cost is the sting. Free gives you five seats and zero AI, the next stop is $450 a month, and at that number Docusaurus with your own search starts looking sensible again for a small team.
