Overview

Jawset is a small German outfit and Postshot is its only product, out of beta since August 2025 and on version 1.1.69 as of 18 August 2026. It trains 3D Gaussian splats from ordinary video or photo sets, running structure-from-motion and the splat optimisation locally on an NVIDIA GPU. Three profiles are on offer, Splat3, Splat MCMC and the older Splat ADC, and picking between them is mostly a question of how much coverage your capture actually has.

For an engineering team the appeal is capturing things that resist modelling. A production line as it is rather than as the drawings claim, a customer site, a cluttered lab you want as a backdrop for perception work. Export is PLY and SPZ, an Unreal plugin covers 5.4 to 5.8 and camera poses import from COLMAP, RealityScan, BlocksExchange and Pix4D OPF, so it slots into an existing photogrammetry workflow rather than replacing it. Everything runs on your own machine, which is a real consideration when the subject is a factory floor or unreleased hardware.

The limits deserve stating plainly. Windows 10 or later, NVIDIA GPU at compute capability 7.5 or above, meaning RTX 2060 and up. Nothing for Linux, AMD or Mac. The free tier is unlimited on scene size but non-commercial, watermarked and locks project files, so commercial use means Indie at EUR 17 a month or EUR 204 a year, or Studio at EUR 39 a month for HDR input, the CLI and AprilTag alignment. And splats are not meshes, so treat this as capture and viewing, with mesh extraction as a separate downstream problem you will have to solve elsewhere.

Key Features

  • Three training profiles, Splat3, Splat MCMC and the legacy Splat ADC, trading speed against artefacts on sparse coverage
  • Runs the camera solve and splat training in one pass, or imports poses from COLMAP, RealityScan, BlocksExchange and Pix4D OPF
  • Export to PLY and SPZ including SPZ version 4, plus HTML export for viewing a scene in a browser
  • Unreal Engine plugin covering 5.4 through 5.8 for dropping captured scenes into a real-time environment
  • Spherical harmonic degree capping to trade file size against view-dependent shading
  • Command line interface and AprilTag-based scene alignment on the Studio tier, which is what makes batch processing viable

Where it holds

  • One installer covers capture to splat, instead of stitching together COLMAP, a training repo and a separate viewer
  • The free tier is unlimited on scene size, which is unusual, and enough to judge whether splatting suits your capture setup before paying
  • Ships regularly: 1.0 in August 2025, 1.1 in May 2026, 1.1.69 on 18 August 2026
  • Training runs locally, so capture data from a factory floor or unreleased hardware never leaves the building

Where it breaks

  • Windows 10 or later only, and an NVIDIA GPU at compute capability 7.5 or higher. No Linux build, no AMD, no Apple silicon.
  • The free tier is non-commercial, watermarks output and locks project files, so any billable work needs a subscription
  • A splat is a rendering primitive, not geometry. Getting a watertight, metrically accurate mesh for CAD or collision is a separate problem it does not solve.
  • Subscription only. Stop paying and existing projects fall back to free-plan restrictions.

My Take

Reality capture got practical for small teams the moment somebody packaged Gaussian splatting as a single Windows installer, and this is that package: point it at a phone video of a workcell and it handles the camera solve and the splat training with no Python environment in sight. The constraints are hard ones, though. Windows only, NVIDIA compute capability 7.5 minimum, and the free tier is non-commercial and watermarked, so real work starts at EUR 17 a month. Worth being blunt that a splat is a rendering primitive rather than geometry, so if you need collision meshes or dimensioned parts this is the start of the pipeline and not the end.

Free tier has no cap on image count, video length or model size but is non-commercial, watermarks rendered output and locks saved projects to the free plan. Indie is EUR 17 per month or EUR 204 per year, adding commercial use, watermark-free rendering, PLY and SPZ export and a floating licence. Studio is EUR 39 per month or EUR 468 per year for EXR, TIF, DNG and RAW input, training above 4K in 16 or 32 bit HDR, the command line interface and AprilTag scene alignment. Subscription only, no perpetual licence beyond the free tier.
