Overview

It started as one thing: an assistant inside TIA Portal that turns a natural language description of a machine sequence into Structured Control Language for a Simatic PLC, then generates the WinCC Unified screen to go with it. Engineering Copilot TIA has been on the Xcelerator Marketplace since July 2024. Since then the product has split into a family. There is a copilot for operators reading machine faults, one for maintenance and as of CES 2026 nine more spanning Teamcenter, Polarion and Opcenter.

The deployment story matters more here than the model story. Siemens offers the operations copilot as an on-premises bundle on a Simatic IPC 1047E with NVIDIA NIM microservices, keeping process data on site and working with no internet connection at all. That single design choice removes the objection that stalls most industrial AI procurement. Siemens runs it in its own Erlangen electronics factory on soldering lines, and thyssenkrupp Automation Engineering put it on battery inspection machines built for EV production.

Buy it if you already run Simatic hardware and your automation engineers spend real hours hand-writing SCL. Skip it otherwise, because none of the value transfers to another PLC vendor. There is no free trial and no public price, so budget for a Siemens sales cycle before anything reaches a controller. And treat the generated code the way you would treat a junior engineer's first draft: reviewed, simulated, then commissioned.

Where it breaks

  • Locked to the Siemens stack. If your cells run Rockwell, Mitsubishi or Beckhoff PLCs it does nothing for you
  • No published price anywhere. Quote-only through a Siemens channel, which means a procurement cycle measured in months and no way to trial it cheaply
  • The copilot count is growing faster than the depth of any single one. Nine more announced at CES 2026 is a lot of surface area for a product line barely two years old
  • Generated SCL still needs human review and simulation before it touches a live machine, so the saving lands in drafting, not in validation

My Take

Most factory AI pilots die on the question of whether plant data leaves the building. Siemens answered that by shipping the operations copilot as a hardware bundle on a Simatic IPC 1047E running NVIDIA NIM microservices, no internet required, which is a straighter answer than most cloud vendors manage. The catch is the obvious one: if your line runs Rockwell or Mitsubishi PLCs, SCL generation in TIA Portal is worth nothing to you. Worth evaluating if you already carry a Simatic estate, ignorable if you do not.
