Tencent Yuanbao
Tencent's consumer assistant app (腾讯元宝), distinct from the Hunyuan model family it serves. Its real edge is legal read access to the closed WeChat corpus. Mainland only.
Overview
A distinction worth drawing before anything else. Hunyuan is Tencent's model family and Yuanbao is the consumer application that serves it, and they are separate things with separate release cadences. Yuanbao is where a normal person in China meets Tencent's AI: an app, an iOS and Android download and a WeChat mini-program, sitting at or near the top five Chinese assistants by monthly active users alongside Doubao, Ernie Bot, Quark and Kimi. It got there partly on product and partly on a Spring Festival subsidy campaign reported at around one billion yuan, which is the sort of detail English coverage tends to leave out.
What makes it technically interesting is data access, not architecture. WeChat's official accounts and Channels hold an enormous volume of Chinese-language writing and video that sits behind a login wall, outside the index of every search engine including Baidu. Yuanbao can read it. For anyone doing market research, competitive tracking or technical reading in Chinese, that is a capability no amount of model quality substitutes for. On top of that the app carries a genuine model picker: Hunyuan and DeepSeek side by side since the DeepSeek-R1 integration in February 2025, Hunyuan Hy3 from 6 July 2026 at 295B total and 21B active parameters, and a Hy4 preview at 770B total with 49B active and a 1M token context window appearing in grey testing during August 2026, tagged as an expert tier above both. Agent mode, which produces downloadable PPT, Word, Excel, PDF and HTML files, went free for every user with the Hy3 launch.
The constraints are real and they are geographic. Registration wants a mainland phone number, the interface assumes Mandarin and there is no international build, so from outside China this is effectively closed. There is no Yuanbao API either. If you want to build on these models you go to Tencent Cloud TokenHub, where Hy3 input pricing dropped to 1 yuan per million tokens in July 2026, and full mainland cloud access generally means a Chinese business licence and real-name verification. Content moderation applies as it does across every domestic assistant: politically sensitive queries produce refusals or redirections, and if your evaluation touches policy, history or governance you need to account for that rather than discover it mid-project. Use it for what it is uniquely good at, which is reading the Chinese internet you otherwise cannot reach.
Key Features
- ✓ Native WeChat integration: one-click summarisation of 公众号 articles, search across 视频号 video content and mini-program handoff, a corpus no external search engine can index
- ✓ Dual model picker inside one app, Tencent's own Hunyuan alongside DeepSeek, switchable per conversation since the DeepSeek-R1 integration in February 2025
- ✓ Hunyuan Hy3 landed in the app on 6 July 2026 at 295B total parameters with 21B active, and Tencent reported roughly 90 percent task completion on internal agent workloads
- ✓ Hy4 preview, 770B total parameters with 49B active and a 1M token context window, entered grey testing in the Yuanbao model picker in August 2026 labelled as an expert tier above Hy3 and DeepSeek
- ✓ Agent mode returns downloadable deliverables as PPT, Word, Excel, PDF and HTML files rather than chat text, free for all users since July 2026
- ✓ Ships as an Android app, an iOS app, a WeChat mini-program and a web client, which matters because the mini-program route needs no install
Where it holds
- • Read access to WeChat official accounts and Channels. That walled garden holds a large share of Chinese business and technical writing, and no other assistant can search it legally
- • Genuinely free at this scale, agent mode included, with no paywall as of August 2026
- • Model choice in one interface. You can run the same prompt against Hunyuan and DeepSeek side by side, which is a cheap way to sanity-check a Chinese-language output
- • Agent mode produces actual files. A finished PPTX or XLSX beats a wall of markdown when the deliverable is going to a colleague
Where it breaks
- • Registration effectively requires a mainland Chinese phone number and the interface is Mandarin-first. There is no international edition, so from outside China this is close to unreachable
- • No Yuanbao API. Anything you want to build goes through Tencent Cloud TokenHub against the Hunyuan models, and full mainland cloud access generally needs a Chinese business licence
- • Output is subject to mainland content moderation. Queries touching policy, history or governance return refusals or deflections, which you must design around if you are evaluating it for research work
- • The headline user numbers came out of a Spring Festival red-packet subsidy campaign reported around 1 billion yuan. Treat retention claims with scepticism, and note that Tencent does not publish primary DAU or MAU figures
My Take
The moat here is not the model, it is the corpus. Yuanbao can search and summarise 公众号 articles and 视频号 video that Baidu cannot index and Google has never seen, and living in Shenzhen that is the difference between an assistant that knows what your industry published this week and one that does not. Hy3 arrived in the app on 6 July 2026 at 295B total parameters with 21B active, agent mode went free for everyone the same day, and a 770B Hy4 preview started showing up in the model picker in August. Worth being clear about the entry cost though: you need a mainland number, there is no English build and there is no Yuanbao API, so treat this as a reading window into Chinese content rather than something you ship on top of.
