Overview
Vercel's UI generator has grown past the single-component toy it started as. As of August 2026 it has a full editor, project grouping, chat archiving, GitHub connect with auto-push, agents that can run terminal commands under permission prompts and take their own browser screenshots, and a Platform API v2 in beta that can start a chat from a repository. July 2026 added direct Figma file inspection, so it reads structure and styles rather than guessing from an image.
Design Mode deserves particular credit. Because it manipulates Tailwind classes directly with full knowledge of shadcn/ui, tweaks to typography, layout, color and copy cost no credits and involve no waiting on a model. That is the correct division of labour: models for structure, direct manipulation for taste. Every competitor that forces you to re-prompt for a four-pixel change looks worse for it.
The limitation is the same thing that makes it good. Output assumes shadcn/ui and Tailwind, and while custom Tailwind configs and public npm packages are supported, a bespoke internal component library gets much less respect than it does in Subframe or Figma Make with Make Kits. Pricing is usage-based on top of seats, with $5 monthly credits on free, $30 per user on Plus and $100 per user on Business, and credits expiring 65 days after rollover. Good for scaffolding a real feature. Still not a replacement for the engineer who has to own the result.

- • Generated pages tend to arrive as one oversized component that a human still has to split before it is maintainable
- • Credit consumption is hard to predict across models, and the $5 free allowance is an afternoon at most
- • Gravity toward Vercel hosting is strong, which is a commercial choice as much as a technical one
My Take
Closest thing in this category to code you would actually merge. The output is Next.js, Tailwind and shadcn/ui, it pushes to a GitHub working branch, and Design Mode lets you nudge spacing and type without a round trip through the model or a credit charge. The catch is the opinionation. Bring a design system that is not shadcn-shaped and you spend the session undoing defaults, and generated pages still land as one oversized component someone has to split. Credit maths is the other irritation, since the Claude Opus 5 option added in July 2026 empties a $20 monthly balance quickly.
