Overview
The premise has not changed much since Descript started and it is still the right one. It transcribes what you recorded, shows you the words and lets you cut the video by cutting the text. What has changed is Underlord, the agentic assistant that arrived with Season 6 and has been extended through 2026, which handles the second half of the work: finding the usable segments in a long recording, reframing them vertical, writing captions and laying the result out. It is a junior editor you brief in plain language, not a menu of filters.
Plans are $16, $24 and $50 a month on annual billing for Hobbyist, Creator and Business, or $24, $35 and $65 month to month. The free tier gives 60 media minutes with a watermark and 720p export, enough to test the editing model and nothing else. Two meters govern real use: media hours for anything you upload, AI credits for the expensive operations like Studio Sound, translation, green screen and generative media. Both run out. The one that catches teams is media hours counting per file rather than per finished minute, so multicam shoots and separate audio tracks multiply consumption in a way the pricing page does not make obvious.
Good fit for developer relations, technical marketing and anyone shipping a steady stream of talking-head or screen-capture content. Bad fit for two groups: post houses that need a real timeline, and engineering teams wanting video processing inside a pipeline, because there is no standalone API and automation ends at the app boundary. Set against Premiere and its own AI features, Descript wins decisively on speed for dialogue-led work and loses on anything requiring craft. That trade is fine if you know which side of it you are on.

Where it breaks
- • Media hours are consumed per uploaded file, not per finished minute, so a three-camera interview burns three times the quota for one hour of content. Teams hit the ceiling well before the plan number suggests
- • No standalone API. Automation stops at whatever the app exposes, which rules out putting it in a processing pipeline
- • Not a real NLE. Keyframed effects, colour work and any serious compositing go to Resolve or Premiere
- • Two meters, media hours and AI credits, plus a top-up model, make the monthly bill harder to predict than the plan price implies
My Take
For an engineering lead who has to ship internal demos, conference cutdowns and release walkthroughs, this removes the part of the job nobody wants: sitting in a timeline. You edit the transcript and the video follows. Underlord, the assistant added in Season 6 and iterated through 2026, will take an hour of screen recording and hand back clip candidates with captions and a vertical reframe. The meter is where it stings, since media hours count per uploaded file, so a two-camera setup burns double for the same hour and Creator's 30 hours a month disappears fast once a workspace is shared.
