Overview

Deemos came out of ShanghaiTech in 2020 and still builds like a graphics research group. Rodin Gen-2 launched on 5 August 2025 on a 10-billion-parameter architecture the team calls BANG, whose distinguishing trick is recursive part-based generation: the model decides an object consists of a body, a handle and a lid, then generates each one and assembles them. Gen-2.5 followed, with Deemos claiming up to a million faces in about four seconds and headroom into tens of millions. ChatAvatar, the character and head line, predates all of it and remains a separate product.

Quads are the reason engineers pick this over cheaper options. Output comes at 4k, 8k, 18k or 50k quads, or triangles up to 500k, and high-poly detail bakes down onto a low-poly target so a real-time budget keeps the surface information. For product design and any interactive use that is the difference between an asset you can edit and an asset you delete. Set expectations properly, though: quad-dominant meshes are not clean edge flow. Chamfers, fillets and thin walls on hard-surface parts still come back wrong often enough that a modeller has to pass over them, and there is no boundary representation anywhere in the pipeline.

Commercially it is the most outward-facing of the Chinese 3D companies. Around 80 percent of revenue is from overseas, the customer list runs to ByteDance, Unity, Figma and Canva, and in June 2026 it raised hundreds of millions of yuan led by Cathay Capital with a Shanghai state capital fund alongside. Pricing is Free, Creator at $30 a month and Business at $120, with direct credits at $1.50, generation free and unlimited and payment taken at download. API access requires the Business plan, which is the number to budget against if you are wiring it into a service rather than clicking through the web app.

Where it breaks

  • Nothing is open. No weights, no self-hosting and no on-prem path below an enterprise contract, which removes it from air-gapped or export-controlled work entirely
  • Quad-dominant is not quad-clean. Edge flow follows the generated surface rather than design intent, so a hard-surface part still needs a modeller before it is anywhere near CAD-ready
  • Credits at $1.50 each get expensive at volume next to Tripo's one-cent credit, and the pay-at-download model makes cost per usable asset hard to predict when you iterate
  • Mesh output only. No B-rep, no parametric history and no dimensional accuracy guarantee, so it has no place near a tolerance-critical part

My Take

Topology is the whole argument. Where most image-to-3D tools hand back a triangle soup a modeller has to rebuild from scratch, Gen-2.5 gives you quads at a chosen density, 4k through 50k, and splits an object into parts that make structural sense. The catch is total closure: no weights, no local inference, $1.50 per credit and everything through Deemos servers. For product visualisation and game art that trade is worth making. For a part with a tolerance on the drawing it is a concept tool, nothing more.
